    Band History

    Aug 2012

Ashes of Tyranny has taken many shapes and forms over the last decade. It's always been in existence, and always had Adam Caylor and Jamison Brummel. Dave Miller has been in the band for the longest aside from those two, approx. 7 years.

First we were called the Jamie and Adam show… that didn't last long, as no-one really likes a band without a bassist and well… the music really wasn't that good in the first place. Later we picked up Dave Miller on bass, and Chris Belknap on drums. I think at that point we were called Running Riot. We all were pretty into Halo for the Xbox and well… we were(are)nerds.

At one point we had 3 guitarists with the addition of Justin Smith, but that only lasted for a few months. The more people you have, the harder it is to get them on the same page. Justin went on to other things and Chris had some personal issues to work through, so we took in Ian Rocker, and lots of mids and tommy parts later we had ourselves a band. We played out some, but not really enough to write home about.

Ian went to Kansas University and was in the band program, meaning a lot less time to practice and gig. After the decision was made that he might have better things to do than drum for a band that didn't do much, we took in AJ Marstall as drummer.

At this point, the band was on its last legs. No-one really wanted to say we were done, but we were.

Three years later, here we are. New music, new people and new attitude.

My wife and I travelled to a few different places for a couple years until we headed back to Kansas. It was then, when I realized how much music was a part of me.

Itching to play again, we were able to get most of the band back together, minus a drummer. The day after my wife and I moved into our house, we met our next door neighbor Jeff Wildfong. It came out that he played drums and enjoyed Pantera, Ozzy and similar artists.

We've been rehearsing for about 5 months and have gotten quite a bit accomplished. I am happy to say that I'm on the right track again.

I've always felt like this was my calling. From the day I picked up a guitar to now, I still feel that I'm here to make a difference. Maybe I won't cure cancer or come up with some great government policy, but someone will hear what I have to say and be moved. Someone will listen to what I have put together, and find their own peace through it. I will be a voice that is heard.

In playing today his influences pull from many different musical sources which make up a unique playing style. Because of this love of all different kinds of music his influences include; Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Guthrie Govan, John Sykes, Doug Aldrich, Michael Schenker, Jerry cantrell, Angus Young, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Glen Campbell, Brent Mason, Danny Gatton, Chet Atkins, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and George Benson. Although the driving force behind playing in Ashes of Tyranny is Adam's 15 year friendship with Jamison and his family, his wife Caryn sons Ray & Sam and of course his dog Elmer.

At 16 by request from my high school music director, I began to learn the bass. This was 6 years after I started playing trombone, so I thought what the hell, can't be too hard. Having only a few bass lessons but mainly teaching myself I quickly learned it was a lot harder than I originally thought. In high school I joined a band that went pretty much nowhere, we only jammed a few times together. But it was still fun. By the time I graduated, I only played the bass occasionally. A few months into college I met Jamison Brummel and in conversation I told him I had played bass in high school, he told me he had a band with a friend of ours in college and another friend he had known for years. He decided to give me a shot since they had just lost their last bassist, it just so happened I fell in love with the music and we all decided that I'd stay.

After 2 years of playing, and me going my own way, along with other situations, we decided to call it quits. For 8 years I let go of the bass, hadn't played any music at all and began working in a warehouse. I saw Jamison leave a post on facebook saying that he was wanting to get a band together to start playing songs he had written. At first I was a little hesitant, but thought what the hell and messaged him, saying that if he hadn't found a bassist yet I'd want to get in on the band. A few months after that discussion we started playing.

Working at the warehouse was a very physical job and over time had cause some fairly serious back issues and wrist problems. With 2 vertebra twisted and about 4 ribs popped out and away from where they should be, having the weight of the bass over my shoulder is a struggle at times, but with doctors help we're trying to fix this. Also, the cyst in the joint of my right wrist makes it difficult too. But pushing through with the adrenaline I get playing our music and the bond that's grown between us is worth it, playing music with these guys is what I want to do until I can't do it anymore.

2003 - First band – Drive like Ten starts to catch some lucky breaks then comes to an end due to some… conflicts of interests

Late 2003 thru 2005 – Played for numerous cover bands of all types & genres trying to keep the fire alive

2006 – got married & had first of two children and stopped playing altogether.

2008 – second child is born and still unable to play any music

2009 – Finally able to dabble with a few local musicians though there was nothing serious.

2010 – While trying to get something going with a local guitar player, my wife falls ill and is diagnosed with cancer. That battle lasted over a year until she recovered and was given the all clear. In the meantime I had convinced myself that my drumming days were officially over.

Late 2012 – Little did I know, luck would be on my side when I answered the door late one Friday night, and there stood Jamison Brummel with an offer I couldn't refuse.

2013 – Ashes of Tyranny – Full Fucking Throttle!!.
